UK Content Restrictions & Ongoing Compliance Trends

We wanted to make you aware of recent regulatory changes in the UK involving certain categories of adult content.

While the headlines may make these updates sound sudden, the reality is that this has been part of a broader trend developing across processors, platforms, banks, and governments for several years now.

The newest UK restrictions are primarily focused on content involving:

  • Choking / strangulation themes
  • Underage roleplay or performers portrayed as minors
  • Certain incest, including “step-family” style scenarios
  • Content that could be interpreted as non-consensual or abusive

For many companies, processors have already been scrutinizing or restricting some of these categories for years. This is less about a single policy change and more about the continued tightening of compliance standards globally.

The larger takeaway is that, if they have not done so already, all content owners should begin evaluating their libraries not only based on today’s rules, but also based on what categories are most likely to face future scrutiny from:

  • Payment processors
  • Card brands (Visa / Mastercard)
  • Governments and regulators
  • Platform distribution partners

We strongly recommend:

  • Reviewing all media, including text titles, keyword tags, and marketing language.
  • Avoiding themes that could be interpreted as minors, coercion, non-consensual acts, or violence. This also applies to non-sexual “fantasy” or storyline elements within content.
  • Looking at your content objectively from a processor, compliance, and legal liability perspective - not just a sales perspective.
  • Planning ahead instead of waiting for emergency policy enforcement changes.
  • Understanding that when these types of policies change, they often change without warning, and there may be no “grace period” for replacing or removing content.

As a further heads-up, unrelated to these UK-specific regulations, payment processors (beginning with CCBill) are declining to process payments for sites containing fantasy-based non-consent themes. We are already seeing clients being denied processing for content involving blackmail, extortion, emotional manipulation, and financial domination in any form.

At this time, we expect fetish-focused content to face the highest level of ongoing scrutiny moving forward.

As always, we’ll continue monitoring these developments and will share updates as standards evolve.

If you have questions about your specific content categories or concerns about future compliance risks, feel free to reach out by submitting a ticket.
